On Thursday, we headed over to Lower Coundon to check out the hottest new restaurant in town.
Located within @rialtoplaza @theloft.coventry is a modern dining space with an industrial type vibe seating just 30 covers.

Admittedly, it’s not the most salubrious looking building from the outside but opening the door to the inside is like stepping through the wardrobe into Narnia.

After climbing the two floors to ‘the loft’ we were shown through to a glass topped table made out of what looked like an old wheel where we got to watch the chefs doing their thing in the open-plan kitchen while we waited for our dinner.

I instantly felt at home in my comfy arm chair perusing the menu with a lovely glass of Viognier, trying to decide what to eat. I’m a sucker for anything that mentions Indian spices & cauliflower, then when there’s also pork belly involved that’s my mind kind of made up. So to start, a perfectly crisp piece of pork belly came sat on a cauliflower purée and rich silky jus served with a crisp fragrant onion bhaji. Carl on the other hand went for the arancini, which were undeniably divine. Crisp balls of arborio rice stuffed with sundried tomato, oregano & oozing mozzarella, served with a lovely light cream sauce.

For main, it was a toss up between the duck & lamb. Carl went duck so I went lamb knowing full well I’d get a bite of the duck. The lamb was beautiful. Marinated in Moroccan spices it melted in the mouth & came with a fluffy herb buttered couscous with a generous dollop of raita. It was the ideal bowl of food for a warm summers evening. Carl’s duck was also expertly cooked & came served with creamy dauphinoise potatoes, savoy cabbage & a red wine jus. Not going to lie, I did get a slight tinge of food envy.

And unfortunately that’s where the meal ends. Not one to ever say no to a pudding, the power decided to play silly buggers meaning a third course was out of the question on this visit. But in my mind that just gives us more of an excuse to go back, not that we really need one. The Loft is such a welcome addition to what seems to be a rapidly expanding Coventry food scene and I for one couldn’t be happier about that! "

Last night I got to try out Coventry's newest opening @theloft.coventry having WON a 3 course meal for 4. I live nearby to the @rialtoplaza and was shocked at how nicely the whole interior has been done (very excited for the cinema to open!) Its absolutely gorgeous inside and I'm so excited to see what they do with the space.

The loft opened yesterday and you wouldn't know, the service was fab and the food amazing.

I had the scallops to start with corn and asparagus. The sweetness of the corn worked really really well with the scallops and to be honest I could have eaten 10 of these starters.

The staff too were really friendly. I'm planning a brunch here with friends soon and I'm excited to go back.

It feels like everywhere you look in Coventry and Warwickshire at the moment there are new places to try. It’s hard to know where to head first but when somewhere gets the seal of approval from the likes of @hungri.ness @foodieloutravels @alice_ate_here and @covfoodie you know it’s gonna be good so last night mum and I headed to @theloft.coventry to check it out.


Tucked at the top of @rialtoplaza, it’s a cozy art-deco space with a real neighbourhood restaurant vibe.


We started with a little amuse bounce of bruschetta topped with sundried tomato and tapenade to whet our appetites while I persuaded mum that we needed more than one glass of wine each and should have a bottle of a lovely Italian red on the list.

To start, we shared arancini laced with more sundried tomato and served with a creamy paprika sauce that felt almost like a romesco rather than a creamy sauce and went perfectly.

Main for me was corn fed chicken with a thyme gravy, potatoes, carrots and puréed peas. No fancy nonsense to hide behind here. Simple, quality ingredients, cooked brilliantly, with a twist of imagination but the confidence to serve up what is basically a chicken dinner and know it will impress. Mum went for a tagine of slow-cooked lamb shoulder, packed with fragrance and spice and was obviously good since I only got one mouthful.

After a cheeky palate cleanser of pink grapefruit sorbet we moved on to share what is hands down the best lemon tart I’ve ever eaten. Perfectly balanced between sweet and tart, with excellent pastry and a to-die-for silky smooth filling, I would go back just for this.

Combine food like this with a beautiful interior that is well judged in every way, from the décor to the volume of the music that’s just loud enough to allow you to chatter all evening without being overhead yet not so loud that you’re competing with it, plus a front of house team who may not be the most longstanding or experienced in the world but have the most important skill - the desire to provide people with a good experience - and you’ve got a winner. What a great addition to the area.

Opted for the Lemon & Thyme Cured Salmon, which came adorned with creamed avocado, pink grapefruit, herb crumb & salmon caviar which was just as impressive in flavour as it was in presentation - a truly stunning dish 😍⁣⁣⁣⁣

Tony began with the Pan Fried Scallops, creamed sweetcorn, charred asparagus & garden flowers. The scallops were cooked perfectly & I don’t even like sweetcorn, but it turns out I like creamed sweetcorn! - having tried a bite I can say this is another standout dish 👌🏼

For main it could be none other than Duck for me. The fat was crispy & rendered to perfection and the meat pink & gloriously tender. Served with dauphinoise potatoes, savoy cabbage & a roasting stock & red wine reduction it was quite simply fantastic 😋

So last night my sister and I had the pleasure of visiting @theloft.coventry - a brand new restaurant situated on the top floor of the Rialto Plaza in Coundon, Coventry. Here's what we ordered:

🐟 PAN SEARED SCALLOPS with Charred Asparagus and Creamed Sweetcorn< br />
🐷 BELLY OF PORK slow cooked in Indian Spices and served with Onion Bhaji, Curried Cauliflower and Coriander

🦆 DUCK BREAST with Dauphinoise potatoes, savoy cabbage and red wine reduction

🐑 LAMB SHOULDER braised in Moroccan Spices with Herby Couscous and Raita

🍫 CHOCOLATE BROWNIE with homemade Honeycomb Ice Cream and Raspberries

🍦CRÈME BRÛLÉE with Blackcurrant Sorbet and Shortbread

Every single course was absolutely to die for - the scallops were cooked perfectly and the onion bhaji was crispy and complemented the pork belly so well.

My duck was again gorgeous especially that RED WINE REDUCTION oh my life 🤤 it took all my willpower not to lick the plate. My sister tried couscous for the very first time (I know, can you believe it!) and loved it and the lamb was "melt in the mouth".

And finally, desserts... The brownie was soft, gooey and delicious, and that ice cream was just wonderful. We also enjoyed the crème brûlée and thought the tartness of the blackcurrant cut through the sweetness of the cream so well and worked amazingly.

Thank you so so much to @theloft.coventry for inviting us out - we will absolutely be visiting again and I've already promised to take my partner for date night 🤣

If you're in Coventry, Warwickshire or the West Midlands and looking for top-notch, fine dining food for reasonable prices in a cosy yet trendy setting, then The Loft is definitely one for you. 👀

Last night my dad and I ventured to @theloft.coventry. They invited me a couple of weeks ago, however I’ve been super busy and hadn’t made it over there. It was 100% worth the wait! The food was delicious, I couldn’t fault it at all, staff were all super friendly and helpful. Food wise we went all out, nibbles, starters, mains and desert! (I didn’t think I’d manage the desert, but I’m glad my dad persuaded me)

To begin: Focaccia with garlic butter. The bread was full of flavour, light on the inside with a nice crisp on the outside.

Starters: Mozzarella and sun dried tomato arancini. Dad said he wouldn’t have ordered this, but on trying it he loved it and now would order again! Roasted pork belly with an onion bhaji, again delicious!

Mains: We both went for the wagyu and brisket burger. Always cooked well done throughout, really tender and juicy. The coleslaw was really good, something I have only recently started eating.

Deserts: Crème Brûlée, this is another first for me. I have always told myself I don’t like custard, but decided to try it out and it was amazing! Will be eating again many times. Lemon tart. Again, great quality food!

From reading that I’m sure you can tell I cannot wait to return. The quality of this food makes me think the steaks will be great also.

Head down there as soon as possible, you won’t regret it. You’ll probably want to book because it is tiny, but very personal. Thank you @theloft.coventry

@theloft.coventry , a lovely little restaurant inside the @rialtoplaza a fantastic looking building!@theloft.coventry has amazing décor and brilliant staff. The chef creates fresh ever changing food with what’s in season. We had a three course meal so today we take a look at our starters.

We had the hot chicken wings and soup of the day, both around £4.50 each. The Loft special sauce on the wings was so tasty it made them some of the best we have had. The soup was so thick and creamy plus came with a fresh bread roll and salted butter.

There are 4 other starters available just swipe for the full menu 👍🏼 Just on the starters alone we highly recommend popping in when in Cov or even just take the drive down the bypass 🥰

The mains are even better. As it was a Sunday we went for the Loft Burger, made from Wagyu grass fed beef brisket with smoked bacon ketchup 😳🤤 and (swipe for) the herb and lemon roast chicken with Yorkshire pudding and summer veg.

All of the food tasted amazing, so so fresh and made with a passion by the chef. The chef has free reign in his kitchen and creates as he sees fit, using all the local in season ingredients. The main only cost around £14 each, an amazing meal for that price.

The décor was fantastic and the staff so friendly 👍🏼 If you are ever in Coventry then what not pop in. With free parting nearby and being on the westside of Cov nearest Solihull.

To start we chose the Lemon and Thyme cured Salmon and Pam seared Scallops 🐟

This was probably my favourite course. Super tasty and really beautifully presented 😍

For main, I was feeling like something light after a heavy weekend of bbqs so opted for the Vegan Special which was Mushrooms stuffed with caramelised onion with a Mediterranean salad. It was surprisingly filling, and although I would have liked tomatoes in the salad (best bit about the med for me!) the flavours were great 💜

My friend had Fish of the day which was Sea bream with a huge side portion of jersey Royal potatoes which she gave a big thumbs up (head to my stories to see the lil fish teeth that made us laugh) 😀

For dessert we chose the crème brûlée and Pistachio and honeycomb ice creams, which tasted delicious.

Finally we washed it all down with a an ice cold and lush Pinot Blush 🍷

Molly was our attentive and friendly waitress for the evening and the layout of the little restaurant is perfect for a relaxed meal with friends or family. I could see some kind of open mic night with tapas and wines going down really well here 🙌

Special mention to Mike's soul and Motown playlist which really gave the perfect vibe 🎶

Coventry is on fire with new openings at the moment, it seems. From burgers to bars, a new place seems to be springing up every month. Among those is The Loft, a surprising and hugely welcome addition to the dining scene in the city.

Tucked away in Coundon, The Loft’s home is Rialto Plaza, a 1930s art deco building that’s had a multi-million pound makeover to form what its owners have called a “one of a kind community lifestyle venue”. It’s now home to a live music venue, flexible working space, the ‘Cozy Cinema Club’ and (the one you’re here for) The Loft.

Step inside and you can’t help but feel you’re somewhere just that little bit different. The journey upstairs honours the building’s art deco heritage alongside some touches that strike the right balance of funky and friendly and have what so many big chains can lack – a little flash of personality.

When it comes to the restaurant itself, the phrase ‘small but perfectly formed’ springs to mind. Tucked away at the top of the building, you could be anywhere. Neighbourhood restaurants are ten-a-penny in London but rarer outside of some of the bigger cities, yet this has that exact feel. Industrial yet cosy.

The place where you can snuggle in a corner for a date, confide in a best friend over dinner, or laugh along with pals at the end of a hard week.

The menu is full of classics. The duck liver parfait and cured salmon you’d expect from somewhere that’s trying to appeal to the majority, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that in my book. Ask the chef in charge and he’ll tell you that’s deliberate. At The Loft they know their audience.

They know that a restaurant like this has to win people’s confidence and loyalty before they start pushing them out of their comfort zone.

A savvy move in my humble opinion and one that doesn’t mean they can’t offer classics with a bit of a twist, and execute those dishes brilliantly using great ingredients.

We start with a complimentary nibble of bruschetta topped with sundried tomato and tapenade. Simple but tasty – the theme of the whole evening. An arancini starter, shared between the two of us, was well done.

I may have mentioned this before, but Mummy Branagh has eaten arancini in Sicily so is particularly pernickety about it, and still gave this the thumbs up. More of that intense, sweet-tart sundried tomato flavour, balanced with mozzarella, and not stodgy in the slightest. The smoked paprika and cream sauce was more reminiscent of a romesco to me, but worked brilliantly with the arancini.

The size of the restaurant means that very quickly you can see the pride that’s in the open kitchen. The care taken in preparing and plating dishes is clear for all to see, and fills you as a diner with confidence in what you’re about to eat.

Mains are built on their centrepiece ingredients – lamb, chicken, fish, duck and vegetable, with the addition of classics like burgers and fish and chips as well as an (almost obligatory in many restaurants these days) array of steaks.

The accompaniments are classic combinations, which arguably means these guys have nowhere to hide. No gimmicks, no clever combos – it’s literally all down to the execution.

I opt for chicken and it’s at this point that I’m won over by The Loft. Let’s be frank – it takes guts and quiet confidence to serve up what is essentially a chicken dinner and know it will impress.

Good quality cornfed chicken, cooked right, with a decent thyme jus that clearly hasn’t cut any corners. Add parmentier potatoes with some root veg added into the equation and peas that I’d say were more crushed than puree’d as promised on the menu, but still delicious, and you’ve got yourself a chicken dinner packed with both flavours and finesse.

Mum goes for the lamb. A Moroccan-inspired tagine of slow-cooked shoulder full of smoky spice and tender as can be. The couscous it comes with is delicate and light, coated simply in a herb butter and the whole dish is brought together with a yoghurt raita, making for a moreish delight that I may or may not have dipped my fork into a few times.

An asparagus side is another simple but well-executed treat. Tender with a bit of bite, and the joy of real hollandaise rather than the jar’d stuff you might get served in some establishments.

A pre-dessert of grapefruit sorbet is tangy and fresh, cleansing the palate and adding that extra touch that reminds you that no, you’re not just in another bar or café masquerading as a restaurant, but in a place that’s trying to take itself seriously whilst staying accessible to everyone.

The dessert list is another shopping list of some of the most popular puds in British restaurants and why the hell not! Despite the temptations of chocolate fudge brownie and creme brulee, we share a lemon tart that I can safely say is the best I’ve ever had.

A light buttery base, rich creamy filling that’s the right balance of tart and sweet. The whole thing is perfectly-judged in flavour, texture and thickness, with a light topping of burnt sugar on top to finish it off. Add a scoop of ice cream and it’s simply sublime. The kind of dessert Gregg Wallace would wet his pants over, and he’d be right to do so.

Before we know it, a couple of hours have passed. The ambience is just right – a healthy bustle, backed by a decent soundtrack, full of people enjoying themselves. The service is good. The staff are clearly new, as they are in so many places, but what they lack in experience they make up for in an eagerness to please and what seemed to me to be a willingness to learn.

On our visit, the show seemed to me to be being run by the chef, who coordinated both the kitchen and front of house with a calmness and professionalism that fills me with confidence that The Loft might be around for a while. Long may it last.
